They've also offshored some of their operations to India and many of them work for the bank there for a year or two and then come here through the bank's internal transfer process. My manager is Indian and most of the names on every email dist list are Indian. They're not better software devs. In fact many are unimpressive. Rather, they do the bidding of mgmt without argument or debate which is causing the systems to decay as vital infrastructure is ignored. It's pernicious and subtle damange but as inevitable as the sun coming up in the east.

It's maddening! We only have a few in my group, and I see their code and I'm like..."this isn't even wrong". You could have an embedded SQL query in a python script, something pretty simple, pull three things from three places and multiple them together. They'll break that query out into three, all the queries effed up with messy text formatting and suddenly I can't just look at the code and see we're doing some simple thing, it's become a page of code I have to follow. Just an example from today.

I have worked in software dev for 25 years and have stories about the utter fraud and chicanery of the H1B program for days-- to say nothing of the often toxic, childish and abusive nature of Indian "management". Anyone who has experienced the same will agree; I knew I was in for some trouble about 15 years ago when I had a female Indian claim that she hated working for Indian managers and highly preferred White Americans. However, I just wrote off the experience to the usual "few bad apples". Fast forward 15 years and the main thing "Indian" of concern to me is I now have Savitri Devi's _Lightning and the Sun_ more or less memorized by heart (IYKYK).
As stated, I have stories for days. However, the main takeaway I would like to convey is that until we fix the problem by eliminating "guest workers" entirely, I simply cannot recognize most tech employment to the vast bulk of young people that are looking for a path to the upper middle class, as tech and engineering was when I graduated college in 1996. Now the upside for me is at my skill level I have been able to find employment at smaller organizations (that do not have the money to flagrantly flaunt the immigration laws) and I do enjoy my life more (I'm a career "downshifter") -- even if I'm not working with Carnegie-Mellon genius types on potentially patent-tier projects and the like. However, young people were led to believe that "learn to code" was a magic meal ticket to stable upper middle class employment and it is simply not a stable, viable career field anymore. Of course, if you're a genius level Stanford or Berkeley CSEE sort of outlier you will undoubtedly have options, but the guy who just works himself silly trying to get a 3.3 GPA at the likes of a lowly State U type CompSci program that just is willing to work hard and wants a decent day job without necessarily having pie in the sky notions of being the next Sergey Brin or whatever-- not so much. When you go into any big tech company in the last 10+ years nearly all the positions have been replaced with H1B's and you are not getting a callback on your resume.

Great article but really needs to provide more emphasis on exactly how cheap Indian labor is. Eg: a truck driver in India's salary is like $200-400 per month. Whereas in the US that can be 2-4000 per month. This huge difference means a massive gap that they can exploit and undercut American workers. The prospect of getting even double the salary they would in India is a huge incentive for them. Working conditions in India are also abysmal so they can exploit that gap as well.
They almost always take kickbacks on imported Indians salary's as well. A hiring manager or business owner will demand the Indian pay him a portion of his salary for the privilege of getting the job & visa. There is an unlimited number of desperate Indians they can import at slave wages to displace Americans. It works as a pyramid scheme where the Indian will come over and work for next to nothing for a number of years till they are able to secure their own residency status then they turn around and repeat the same process by importing and exploiting more Indians. This will effectively continue in an endless downward wage spiral in a never-ending race to the low standard of India.

I could write a lot about this, having worked in IT since the mid 80’s. Everything you say is true. USAA and Geico, most telecom companies I worked at have outsourced entire departments. The H-1B fee is not meaningful. With 240k STEM OPT foreign grads seeking H-1B visas, there is no need to import them anymore. This merely changes the pipeline a bit. The Trump admin is doing nothing to curtail legal immigration - nothing. And it's a huge problem.
How does it do nothing? OPT still has to go through the H1B process to secure the work visa. H1B is capped at 85k per year so that bottleneck is still there, and now there is a fee a company must pay to boot.
You only have to pay a fee if you are immigrating from India for the first time. Any OPT is already here and doesn't pay the fee. Fyi, 2026 H-1Bs are already all approved at the same level as 2025. There is zero actual reduction of legal work visas being issued.

However, young people were led to believe that "learn to code" was a magic meal ticket to stable upper middle class employment and it is simply not a stable, viable career field anymore. Of course, if you're a genius level Stanford or Berkeley CSEE sort of outlier you will undoubtedly have options, but the guy who just works himself silly trying to get a 3.3 GPA at the likes of a lowly State U type CompSci program that just is willing to work hard and wants a decent day job without necessarily having pie in the sky notions of being the next Sergey Brin or whatever-- not so much. When you go into any big tech company in the last 10+ years nearly all the positions have been replaced with H1B's and you are not getting a callback on your resume.

Great article but really needs to provide more emphasis on exactly how cheap Indian labor is. Eg: a truck driver in India's salary is like $200-400 per month. Whereas in the US that can be 2-4000 per month. This huge difference means a massive gap that they can exploit and undercut American workers. The prospect of getting even double the salary they would in India is a huge incentive for them. Working conditions in India are also abysmal so they can exploit that gap as well.
They almost always take kickbacks on imported Indians salary's as well. A hiring manager or business owner will demand the Indian pay him a portion of his salary for the privilege of getting the job & visa. There is an unlimited number of desperate Indians they can import at slave wages to displace Americans. It works as a pyramid scheme where the Indian will come over and work for next to nothing for a number of years till they are able to secure their own residency status then they turn around and repeat the same process by importing and exploiting more Indians. This will effectively continue in an endless downward wage spiral in a never-ending race to the low standard of India.

How does it do nothing? OPT still has to go through the H1B process to secure the work visa. H1B is capped at 85k per year so that bottleneck is still there, and now there is a fee a company must pay to boot.
You only have to pay a fee if you are immigrating from India for the first time. Any OPT is already here and doesn't pay the fee. Fyi, 2026 H-1Bs are already all approved at the same level as 2025. There is zero actual reduction of legal work visas being issued.

Entire test environments down for months while the jeet manager would politely state “just 2 more weeks” every 2 weeks. This is something that would have been resolved in a matter of days just 10 years ago.
Simple firewall ACL requests and testing: actions that could be resolved in hours not that long ago requiring weeks while the jeet teams deflect and defer their issue even though logs would provide clear evidence of which side the issue lay. And then once they resolved their issue, no communication or accountability for the fix. It simply “magically” starts to work. This occurred regularly.
Indian culture dictates that admitting fault is weakness with this kind of very feminine, pseudo-masculine dynamic that is completely incompatible in a high-trust Western culture.
The CONSTANT problems with simply trying to communicate complex problems with someone that can barely speak or write English.
